Bhakti Ziek

Bhakti Ziek is internationally known for work that has ranged from backstrap weaving to digital jacquard. Her extensive exhibition record includes work in the permanent collection of Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) and the Museum of Arts and Design (New York City, NY). She has lectured and taught workshops throughout the United States and abroad. Her writings on contemporary fiber have been published in many journals, including American Craft, Surface Design Journal, and Fiberarts. She is the co-author, with Alice Schlein, of The Woven Pixel: Designing for Jacquard and Dobby Looms Using Photoshop. A former college professor (Arizona State University, University of Kansas, Philadelphia University), she currently lives in Randolph, Vermont. Ziek has a M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art; a B.F.A. from the University of Kansas; and a B.A. from SUNY at Stony Brook, NY.

TRAVEL
Travel has been an important influence on my work and my attitudes. I have travelled extensively in the U.S.A., Canada, Europe, Central America, Haiti and Southeastern Asia. The longer trips include:
2006 Turkey (4 weeks exploring with emphasis on textiles)
2002 Turkey, textile expert for SuYolu tour, included feltmaking workshop (ten days)
2001 Turkey, textile expert for SuYolu tour that emphasized Turkish textiles (ten days)
1997 Florence, Italy; studied silk jacquard weaving at Fondazione Lisio (6 weeks)
1996 Northern Italy and Southern France (two weeks)
1982-83 Southeast Asia: India, Nepal, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan; part of the
14-months travelling was spent studying acupuncture and thanka painting
1972-76 Guatemala; studied weaving; owned and operated a restaurant
