The "Jazz Series" speaks to my relationship with music, specifically jazz from the 1920's.
It reminds of a time in which music and dance were an integral part of American culture and a great source of hope, resilience and simple upbeat fortitude.
I grew up with a player piano in our home and my father played stride piano and slide trombone. Listening to and playing tunes together was a big part of our family fabric. These days, I seem to grow more passionate about the music of Billy Holiday, Bix Beiderbeck, Ella Fitgerald, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.
When my father passed away in 2012, I began listening, more often, to the multiple CD's he had made for me from his 78's record collection.
The monoprint "Jazz Series" celebrates my father's (Joe) life. A life well lived and loved . And it is a visual expression of the exuberance of the American jazz era.
