BigTown Gallery announces Hey Joe: An Homage to Joseph Cornell,guest-curated by Burlington, VT artist and SUNY Plattsburgh Associate Professor, W. David Powell June 13th - July 29th - Opening reception June 23rd, 5 -7pm.
With Hey Joe: An Homage to Joseph Cornell, W. David Powell has assembled a crew of New England artists, for all of whom Joseph Cornell has been an important influence. Although Joseph Cornell is mainly known for his assemblage work, it must be said that he was influenced by the early collage work of major artists of the time such as Picasso, Braque, Ernst, and Schwitters, to name but a few. Cornell joined this pantheon, which became the pivotal influence on generations of subsequent artists, not least collage artists.
Varujan Boghosian and Rosamond Wolff Purcell have exhibited at BigTown Gallery multiple times in both solo and group shows. W. David Powell, Marcus Ratliff, and Peter Thomashow have likewise shown work at BigTown in various group shows. Appearing as well is the work of Todd Bartel, Joe Brainard, Kirsten Hoving, Michael Oatman and Robert Seydel. We are enthusiastic about the diversity and breadth of the work in this exhibition, and look forward to what will be a lively and thought provoking juxtaposition.
