THE GEOMETRIC EXERCISES of HELEN MATTESON

Helen Matteson / watercolors

CENTER GALLERY

June 26 – August 11, 2019

Helen Matteson began her career as an artist New York City studying the piano at the National Academy of Design. From her time in New York to Thetford, VT, where she ultimately settled, there was rarely a day she didn’t spend painting or drawing. By her death in 2011, she had amassed a collection of over 400 complete sketchbooks and thousands of other paintings and drawings. Her work shows the influence of artists such as Mark Rothko and early Frank Stella in its geometric and minimalist forms. BigTown represents her estate, and this will be the third time we have exhibited her work.
