We are delighted to present, in the main gallery, our second solo exhibition of Varujan Boghosian (b.1926), and, in the center gallery, our first solo exhibition of the photographs of New Hampshire resident, Erick Hufschmid. In response to our invitation to show his photographs, Hufshmid revealed his interest in beginning a series that would photograph, and document, the studios of known artists. He chose to take the opportunity presented by this show to begin that project, photographing the studio of Varujan Boghosian. The result is produced in a portfolio of 18 illuminating photographs of the artist's studio. Shown here individually and in portfolio.
The photographs represent various views of Boghosian’s studio, as seen by the camera's eye. Each individual perspective is selected by the photographer – from the dense jungle of materials covering nearly every conceivable studio surface – for its arresting, revealing arrangement of form, color, and context. Hufschmid's transparent record of the working studio of Varujan Boghosian brings into sharp focus the artist’s compositional brilliance – and perceptively illuminates the exacting nature of the master collagist’s eye. The photographs of A Muse – A Visit to the Studio of Varujan Boghosian offer an unimpeded, intimate view into the working process of the artist. Hufschmid documents Boghosian's fifty years of obsessive collecting, his deft recast and reshaping of found objects.
This portfolio of photographs were taken in the spring of 2011 at the studio of Varujan Boghosian, located on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Accompanying texts by Charles Simic, poet & writer, & Kathy Hart, Interim Director of the Hood Museum
